BUILDING A BRAND YOU CAN HEAR
Nothing was broken. Sa Pizzedda had a strong local soul and a beautifully detailed identity that people genuinely loved. But a brand designed around one counter starts to strain once it multiplies. Fine detail disappears on a busy street. Charm that works face to face doesn’t always survive the jump to a shopfront, a delivery bag or a phone screen.
The brief called for a refresh that would connect with a growing city presence and give people a more engaging reason to notice the brand, without losing the Sardinian roots that made it worth noticing in the first place. Rooted, but ready to travel.
Food brands tend to sell through the same senses. Taste and smell do the persuading, and the photography does the rest. We went looking for a point of difference in the sensory experience itself, and Sa Pizzedda had one that no one in the category had claimed. Sound.
The crunch was already everywhere. It’s in the name of the internal group behind the brand – the ‘Board of Crunch’. It’s in the line customers already repeat, Croccantezza Sarda. It’s the reason the queue forms. Crunch was never a product detail at Sa Pizzedda, it was the entire point, and no other pizza brand owned a sound.
We explored a second route, Folded for the Street, built around the format and the way a pizzedda is eaten on the move. The fold explains how people eat it. The crunch explains why they come back. So we followed the sound.
Crunch Out Loud turns a texture into an attitude: loud, bold, a little cheeky and impossible to ignore. It gave us a manifesto tracing the journey from Cagliari to Milan and beyond, ending in a promise of no soft bases and no quiet corners.
It also gave the brand a voice, borrowed from its own paperwork. Sa Pizzedda now speaks as the Board of Crunch, a very serious board that cares about one thing only. It issues rulings, rejects motions, and has reviewed soft pizza and found it wanting. The humour lives in the formality, and the message never changes.
Every part of the identity was designed to be heard as much as seen.
The wordmark is bold, condensed and solid enough to read from across the street. Look closer and it has clearly been through the oven: edges cracked, the fold still prominent. It scales from a phone screen to a fascia while keeping a hand-made imperfection, which feels right for a product made by hand every day.
The colour palette follows the bake. Raw dough, golden cheese, toasted crust and char sit alongside a heritage green, with tomato red leading from the front. Every colour earns its place because every colour comes out of the oven and links to the heritage behind the brand. The scale gives the brand a natural way to organise menus and categories.
Our refinement worked in reverse. Rather than polishing the brand into something smoother, we pushed it back towards something raw and authentic. A heavy, rough-edged display face does the shouting on headlines and shopfronts. A script adds a note of heritage and picks out key information. A clean condensed sans typeface keeps menus and prices easy to read. The modern energy comes through the styling and the palette, not by sanding the character away.
Then we made the sound visible. A family of hand-drawn sound words, CRUNCH and CROCC among them, bursts across walls, tees, flags, pint glasses and social posts, building on the hand-drawn energy already found in store. We also proposed a sonic logo: a real bite, recorded in store, to close every video and ad.
The system was taken through the full brand experience. A shopfront window tells passers-by “Sorry, we can’t hear you. We’re eating.” Posters, A-boards and carrier bags declare loud food for loud cities. Street banners promise Sardinia at full volume, and a wrapped Ape van and delivery backpacks carry Crunch Out Loud through the city. Slice bags, cups, menus, uniform, a website and a mobile menu complete the everyday touchpoints.
We couldn’t resist a few louder ideas too. A pizzedda lilo and a set of deck chairs printed as baked slices show how far a confident platform can stretch while staying on message.
Whatever the final placement, the thinking holds. A brand can only shout about what is already true. For Sa Pizzedda, the truth could be heard from the first bite. We simply turned it up.
