CREATING AN OUTREACH IDENTITY FOR COMPOS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
EVENTS & ORGANISATIONS
LOGO & VISUAL IDENTITY • DIGITAL DESIGN • PRINT DESIGN • EVENT GRAPHIC DESIGN
COMPOS is an outreach programme developed by the University of Oxford’s Physics Department, created to encourage young students to pursue Maths and Physics beyond school and consider further study at Oxford. While rooted in one of the world’s most respected academic institutions, the programme needed its own identity that could connect with a younger audience and make these subjects feel accessible, engaging and within reach.
THE CHALLENGE
The core challenge was to create a visual identity that balanced two distinct needs. It had to reflect the credibility, professionalism and academic rigour associated with the University of Oxford, while also introducing a sense of energy and approachability that would resonate with students at school and college level.
Working within an established set of brand guidelines added a further layer of complexity. The identity needed to feel part of the wider university ecosystem, yet distinct enough to give COMPOS its own voice and presence across outreach materials, events and digital platforms.
THE SOLUTION
We approached the identity with a focus on structured creativity. Using the University of Oxford’s secondary colour palette allowed us to introduce a brighter, more vibrant visual language while remaining aligned with the overarching brand. This was paired with the university’s typography to maintain consistency and reinforce credibility.
The opportunity for expression came through the creation of the COMPOS logo and a flexible visual identity system. We developed a series of angular lines, arrows, blocks and circular forms that subtly reference electrical circuits. These elements represent connection, direction and progression, reflecting both the nature of Physics and the journey students take as they develop their interests.
This system was designed to be adaptable across multiple touchpoints. It enabled us to integrate imagery, develop distinctive iconography and create a cohesive suite of assets, including social media content, pitch decks and outreach materials for events and exhibitions.
The result is an identity that feels both grounded and energised. It carries the authority of Oxford while opening the door to a new generation of students, presenting Maths and Physics not as distant or intimidating subjects, but as dynamic fields full of possibility.
