Building an identity for a coalition, not a company.

Sleep for Health is a national coalition of leading sleep and health organisations, formed to raise awareness, influence policy and close the gaps in support that exist across the sleep health sector. Chaired by two of the field’s leading academics, the Coalition speaks to government, healthcare professionals and the public all at once. Its identity needed to do the same.

The Challenge

Most health identities have to solve a familiar tension: look clinical enough to be trusted, human enough not to feel cold. Sleep for Health had a second, harder problem sitting on top of that one. It isn’t a single organisation with a single point of view. It’s a coalition of experts, charities and academics, each with their own identity, their own audience and their own stake in the outcome. The brand couldn’t belong to any one of them. It had to represent all of them, and it had to do that convincingly enough to be taken seriously by policymakers and health professionals who hold real influence over how sleep is treated as a public health issue.

Anything too soft would undercut the authority the Coalition needed in front of government. Anything too clinical would flatten the sense of collaboration that gives the Coalition its reason to exist. It had to sit confidently in both worlds.

The idea: Coalition

Everything in the identity works back to a single idea, coalition. Not a group of organisations sat side by side, but something formed at the point where they overlap: shared expertise, shared urgency, a shared aim to put sleep at the heart of health policy in the UK.

That idea shows up first in the mark. Rather than a single fixed symbol, the logo is built from layered, organic forms, hand drawn rather than geometrically perfect, that overlap to create something new where they meet. The looser, imperfect edges are deliberate. They reflect how coalition working actually happens, not through rigid alignment, but through flexible, collaborative give and take between independent organisations pulling in the same direction.

The wordmark carries the same thinking. Set in a rounded, all lowercase typeface, it softens the clinical edge that so many health and policy brands default to, without giving up legibility or seriousness. It’s paired with a second, more structured typeface for supporting text, so the two work together the way the Coalition itself does: warmth balanced by rigour.

Colour with a job to do

The palette moves deliberately away from the navy and grey most health and policy brands reach for by default. Instead, three colours: a vibrant cyan, a rose pink and a calming lilac, sit at the front of the system, bringing energy and warmth to a category that too often defaults to feeling clinical or bureaucratic.

Where those colours overlap, in the mark itself and across the wider system, they blend into a deeper blue and purple. Those darker, blended tones carry the professionalism and authority the brand needs in front of policymakers and healthcare audiences, but they’re earned rather than assumed. They’re built from the same vibrancy and calm that define the brighter palette, not applied over the top of it. The system quite literally shows collaboration producing credibility.

Built to represent, not to compete

One deliberate decision early on was to design the identity with no reference to the founding members’ own branding. Sleep for Health needed to remain visibly neutral, a shared space the Coalition’s members could stand behind equally, rather than something that leaned toward any one organisation’s existing look. Authority here comes from the identity’s independence, not from borrowing credibility from any single member.

Where it lives

The identity launches first across Sleep for Health’s digital presence, with the system built to extend into events, campaign collateral, reports and policy documentation as the Coalition’s public profile grows. Founding members will also be able to use the mark to identify their involvement across their own channels, a small but important detail for a brand built on shared ownership.

The response

Ahead of launch, the identity was shared with the Coalition’s founding members. The response was unanimous: this looked and felt like what they were trying to build together, a unified, credible voice for an issue that affects public health at a national scale, and the platform to help drive policy and governance forward, collectively, with sleep firmly positioned at the heart of health.
